6 Potent Remedies That Support the Liver

You’re as healthy as your liver. A liver that isn’t functioning optimally can weaken your immune system and cause lots of health issues.
A healthy liver, on the other hand, will remove toxins, break down hormones, help digest fats and much more. High alcohol consumption isn’t the only bad habit that can hurt your liver. Exposure to chemicals, overmedication and eating uncooked shellfish can damage your liver.
Luckily, you can use herbs to cleanse your liver and strengthen your immune system. Here are the best herbs for cleansing your liver.

1. Dandelion root

The liver produces bile which helps metabolize fat and remove toxins from the blood. Dandelion can aid these processes since it helps improves the flow of bile. Dandelion stems and tea contain antioxidants which improve absorption of minerals, fight inflammation and prevent liver disease, research shows.

2. Milk thistle

This is one of the most popular liver detoxification herbs. It is known to build liver cells and remove toxins from the body. The best thing about this herb is that it undoes the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Research shows it can be used to treat alcoholic liver disease, toxin-induced liver diseases and hepatitis.

3. Garlic

You probably know that garlic is good for circulation, but did you know that it can help cleanse your liver? Garlic activates enzymes which help remove toxins to assist the liver. It also contains antioxidant, antifungal and antibiotic properties which strengthen the immune system.

4. Artichokes

Artichokes can prevent liver toxicity and reduce the effects of alcohol and processed foods. Thanks to cynarin and silymarin, phytonutrients which aid in bile production and protect the liver cells. In fact, artichokes do more than cleanse the liver; research shows they can lower cholesterol levels by up to 4.2 percent in 12 weeks.

5. Burdock root

This herb is popularly known for purifying the blood. Research shows it contains ingredients which remove heavy metals from the blood. Well, the benefits of burdock root don’t end there. It helps stimulate production of bile while helping repair damaged liver cells.

6. Turmeric

Turmeric is a potent spice with many health benefits. Recent studies show it can improve circulation, prevent cancer, reduce pain and detoxify the body. Thanks to curcumin, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, this herb helps the liver remove toxins and wastes from the body. It’s also worth mentioning that curcumin increases production of bile, and as a result improves liver function.

White Rice Pales in Comparison to These Antioxidant-Rich Grains

Why does switching from white rice to brown rice enable overweight individuals to significantly reduce their weight, their waist size, their blood pressure, and the level of inflammation within their bodies?
We think it might be the fiber. Brown rice has four times as much dietary fiber as white rice, including prebiotic types of fiber that foster the growth of our good bacteria, which may help account for the anti-obesity effects of brown rice.
Besides the prebiotic fiber, when brown rice is milled into white, there are all sorts of vitamins and minerals that also are lost, as well as phytonutrients such as gamma oryzanol, which may help shift one’s preferences to healthier foods. Petri dish studies suggest gamma oryzanol may help lower cholesterol. And, along with other compounds found in the rice bran, which is what makes brown rice brown, gamma oryzanol may inhibit human cancer cell growth through antioxidant means, anti‑proliferative and pro-cancer cell suicide mechanisms, immune system modulation, and increasing barrier protection. However, this was all seen in test tubes, not people.
There are two human studies, though. The Adventist Health Study found that brown rice was one of four foods associated with significantly decreased risk of colorectal polyps, which can turn into colorectal cancer. Eating cooked green vegetables every day was associated with 24 percent lower risk, which was as much as eating dried fruit just three times a week. Eating beans, chickpeas, split peas, or lentils at least three times a week was associated with 33 percent lower risk, but brown rice seemed to garner 40 percent lower risk, and that was just a single serving or more a week.
The other human study reported increased muscle strength after supplementation with a brown rice compound in hopes that it could provide a side effect-free alternative to anabolic steroids. The dose the researchers were giving, however, is equivalent to approximately 17 cups of brown rice a day, so it’s not clear if it works at practical doses.
Naturally pigmented rice, such as black rice and red rice, may be even more nutritious than brown rice. During the last decade, research has shown that these natural anthocyanin plant pigments may have a variety of beneficial effects. Anthocyanins are what make blueberries blue and red cabbage red. “Recent recognition of the fact that taking diet rich in plant foods lowers the risks of cancer promotes the enthusiasms in isolating…[these components as] pharmaceutical agents”—but why not just eat the blueberries or add some red cabbage to your stir fry atop some colorful rice?
Black, purple, and red rice—and their pigment compounds—have been found to be involved in a variety of antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-heart disease, anti-diabetes, and anti-allergy activities, but these were all studies done in a lab. We don’t yet have clinical studies, but these pigmented rice varieties have everything that brown rice has, plus five times more antioxidants and a variety of extra benefits. That’s why I, or rather my rice cooker, has always cooked red, black, or purple rice with a handful of lentils or split peas thrown in for good measure, since they cook in the same time frame.
But why don’t most people even choose brown over white? Well, brown rice does not last as long on the shelves, so it can actually be more expensive even though it’s less processed. White rice, on the other hand, is like food for the apocalypse, even puttingTwinkies to shame. White rice was still edible after 30 years—though, by then, it may have a “slight playdough” odor.

10 Healthy Food Trends for 2018

You might not think of food as something that’s trendy, but food trends are totally a thing, and there are some delicious ones bubbling up for next year. These are the healthy 2018 food trends we’re getting excited about.
A whole slew of companies put together lists of upcoming food trends each year. For the list below, I looked at predictions from Unilever and Whole Foods and pulled out healthy food predictions. Healthy eating in general is on-trend for 2018.
These are some of the healthy 2018 food trends to get excited about!

2018 FOOD TRENDS

1. Poke Bowls

A poke bowl is basically a sushi bowl, and these restaurants are popping up all over the U.S. right now. Just like sushi, you can make your poke bowl healthy or not, depending on the toppings you choose. Skip the tempura flakes and mayo-based sauces. Instead, pile on the veggies, tofu, brown rice, seaweed and lighter sauce options, like soy sauce.
You might think that a poke bowl needs to have fish in it, but with so many delicious vegetable and topping selections, you don’t need fish to put together a delicious poke bowl.

2. Plant-Based Food

As a long-time vegan, this is the food trend that I’m most excited about. People are eating more plants for their health, for the planet and for the animals.
Vegan options are easier to find than ever, and even when a restaurant doesn’t have vegan menu items, they’re much more willing to customize something than they were 11 years ago when I first went vegan. Or even than they were a year ago. Bring on the plants!

3. Fermented Food

Fermented foods are deliciously trendy right now, and that’s great news for our gut health. Think fermented foods beyond yogurt, like kimchi, sauerkraut and fermented pickled vegetables.
Restaurants like fermented foods because customers order them, but also because they keep well by nature, making them easy to keep in stock.

4. Edible Flowers

Edible flowers make any dish feel fancy, and they’re coming on strong for 2018. You can buy edible flowers at more upscale food stores, or you can grow your own. Either way, look forward to floral salads, drinks, desserts and more.

5. Superfood Powders

Maca, matcha, spirulina, turmeric and cacao are probably the most well-known superfood powders out there, and you’ll find these in granola bars, smoothies or sold as-is on the shelf.
Turmeric is an easy superfood powder to get you started, because it’s available at any grocery store.

6. Fancy Mushrooms

You probably know by now that mushrooms are great for your health, and wild mushroom varieties are super hot right now. Of course, you can use fancy mushrooms in your next stir fry, but sweet mushroom drinks using less-common varieties plus coffee or chocolate are hitting menus and store shelves.

7. Middle Eastern Food

I’m extra delighted about this 2018 food trend, because I grew up eating Middle Eastern food. You’re probably already eating your share of stuffed grape leaves, baba ghanoush and hummus, but now you can add deep seasonings like tangy za’atar and spicy harissa to your spice cabinet.

8. Transparent Labeling

Consumers want to know what we are buying, and companies are starting to respond with certified labels. More and more companies are adding Non-GMO, Fair Trade and Organic products to their lines, and this is great news for the planet, for consumer health and for farmworkers.
Restaurants are also finally starting to list calorie information on the menu, so you can make more informed ordering decisions. Whole Foods lists this as a food trend, but this will actually be a requirement by May of 2018.

9. Root-to-Stem Cooking

You’ve heard of nose-to-tail, and root-to-stem is the plant-based equivalent. Not only does this way of cooking give you more veggie bang for your buck, but it reduces food waste.
Restaurants are making the most of produce by using edible parts that we’d normally throw away, like celery leaves, broccoli stems, carrot greens and watermelon rinds.

10. Fizzy Water

La Croix paved the way for this healthy food trend. Lightly-flavored, unsweetened sparkling waters are a healthy 2018 food trend to get excited about. These zero-calorie drinks are a great way to stay hydrated when you just don’t like water.
A lot of the sparkling waters on the market are artificially flavored, but some are now using plant extracts. You can also make your own flavored fizzy water by adding a few slices of fruit to a glass of seltzer and waiting.
Worried that carbonation is bad for your bones? A 2016 study actually debunked this idea. It turns out that colas (diet or regular), not carbonation, were the culprits when it came to bone loss. And if it’s the waste from all of those cans and bottles that has you worried, you can always invest in a sparkling water maker. Sodastream is the one my family uses. I like that we can exchange the empty cartridge for a discount on a full one, and the company reuses the empties.

15 Best & Worst Foods to Eat When You’re Sick

Being sick is never fun. While reducing stress and getting plenty of sleep can help you get through a nasty bout of seasonal sickness, food can play an important role, too. Of course, some foods are better than others. Here are some of the best and worst foods you can eat when you’re feeling under the weather.

BEST FOODS

Broth.

Chicken soup has been a longtime remedy for any sickness — and for good reason. Broth, slow-cooked bone broth in particular, is very dense in nutrients, including magnesium, phosphorus, and other difficult to obtain trace minerals. Your body will have a harder time fighting off illness if it is suffering a deficiency, and drinking warm broth is comforting for the soul.

Hot Tea.

Not only is green tea chock full of antioxidants, but it also has anti-viral and antibacterial properties — yet another reason to stock green tea in your pantry. If caffeine isn’t your thing, chamomile tea elevates phenols, which are antioxidants that have been shown to possess antibacterial powers.

Raw honey.

Honey is sometimes thought to be as effective (or more) in suppressing coughs as over-the-counter meds. A 2010 study found that children with upper respiratory infections experienced greater relief from a 2.5 ml serving of honey before bed than from over-the-counter cough suppressants. If you have some spare change, try New Zealand’s own manuka honey, which is touted as being one of the most medicinal honeys in the world.

Citrus.

Grapefruit, oranges, and lemons are bursting with nutrients, including vitamin C, which is a well-documented ally if you’re fighting off the sniffles. Eat them whole, spritz some into your water, or make homemade juice if you’re feeling up to it. Popsicles are also great for numbing a sore throat. Ask someone to make you some homemade orange juice pops for a tasty, health-boosting remedy. Don’t waste your money on Vitamin C supplements, though — the body can’t use more than 200 milligrams a day

Apple cider vinegar.

Does ACV have no end to its glory? It is a potent anti-viral, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory liquid. It also helps to reduce acidity in the body by acting as an alkalizing agent. A tonic consisting of a tablespoon or two of raw ACV, raw honey, and lots of water could have you feeling a little bit less foggy in no time.

Spicy foods.

If you just have a head cold, eating something spicy might be the way to clear out your sinuses. When consuming spicy foods, your body will naturally loosen the mucus and phlegm that is clogging your body, and you might be able to breathe a little better. Spicy foods include chili pepper, horseradish, and wasabi. Take note: if you have a stomach illness, spicy foods may only aggravate your symptoms.

Garlic.

As an antimicrobial and antibiotic, garlic is known to boost immunity. It also increases enzymes that help to detoxify the blood. Studies have shown that garlic can not only help ward off colds but also reduce the duration and severity of illness. Load up a homemade bone broth and sip throughout the day.

Elderberries.

A 2009 study showed that elderberry extracts were able to block the H1N1 virus’s ability to infect host cells.  That means it is a potent anti-viral. Okay, so maybe you don’t have an elderberry tonic stored in the back of your fridge, but if you find it or decide to make some, know that elderberries are great virus-fighters. Some even claim it can reduce the duration of colds and upper-respiratory infections.

Ginger.

This well-documented root helps with nausea. But, instead of reaching for a regular ginger ale loaded with high fructose corn syrup, try a natural ginger beer or ginger tea. These will have a higher potency of ginger and won’t cause further inflammation caused by unwelcome sugars.

Bananas.

Aside from their high vitamin content and energizing sugars, bananas are quite gentle on the stomach. If you’re suffering from a digestive-related illness, know bananas are a safe bet — along with rice, applesauce, and toast.

Oregano.

Anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory, oil of oregano is extremely powerful and has been shown to fight viruses. It inhibits the growth of unwelcome pathogens, and has myriad other health uses to warrant it a spot in your medicine cabinet. Add a few drops to water or cook with the whole herb. Just exercise caution, as it is very potent.

WORST FOODS

In general, you should avoid any foods that cause inflammation, like white flour, refined sugar, and artificial sweeteners. Here are a few examples:

Highly acidic foods.

When your body is trying to bring itself back into balance, you don’t want to keep pumping in acidity and inflammation. Stay clear of any foods to which you may be sensitive — like dairy and gluten — and opt for eating less red meat and dairy, which can be heavy and acidic to the body.

Sugary foods.

Sugar is acidic to the body. Avoid refined sugars and artificial sweeteners, which cause inflammation. Instead, opt for honey and maple syrup, which are full of beneficial minerals, or eat whole fruits, which balance the sugar intake with fiber.

Fatty foods.

Fried chicken is not going to make you feel any better. Foods high in grease and fat often leave your stomach unsettled and can produce further inflammation. Adding to your bodily inflammation while your sick just isn’t a smart idea, so steer clear of all fast food burgers when you are fighting off a cold.

Dairy.

While there isn’t a general consensus on this, most believe that dairy encourages the development of mucus. It’s probably not something you’re craving when you have a stomach bug either. If you’re searching for something cold to soothe your throat, opt for natural popsicles before hunkering down with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough. (On the other hand, fermented dairy, like yogurt and kefir, may be beneficial in small amounts, due to the high levels of probiotics.)
The earlier you recognize an incoming illness, the better. Eating the proper foods can help you get out of bed and out into the world in no time. Remember, your food is medicine. What foods do you use to remedy the flu and seasonal sicknesses?

The Essential Oil that is Similar to Cannabis and is LEGAL in All 50 States

Did you know that there is an essential oil that is similar to cannabis? And it’s legal in all 50 states! As we know, the compound that makes cannabis therapeutic is the beta-caryophyllene and its level in CBD is 35%! However, Copaiba essential oil possesses  55% of beta-caryophyllene!
That makes Copaiba essential oil one of the most powerful natural substances to deal with various health issues.

Copaiba essential oil is a unique blend of four different species. It is derived from the resin of the copaiba tree which can grow upwards of more than 100 feet and can be found in tropical South America. Copaiba oil is widely used in cosmetic products including soaps, creams, lotions, and perfumes. Since the 16th century, copaiba essential oil has been utilized in traditional health practices by the natives of north and northeastern Brazil. Did you know that Copaiba is potentially the highest anti-inflammatory substance known. It has greater action than Ibuprofen or even Cortisone – but with NO SIDE EFFECTS?

Copaiba essential oil benefits

Copaiba can help soothe anxious feelings and it can be applied to the skin to promote a clear, smooth complexion. Copaiba essential oil comes with a wide range of other supportive qualities including: nervous system, cellular support, cardiovascular health, digestive health, emotional balancing, immune support, inflammatory response, respiratory system and reducing neuronal excitability.
The most prevalent compound in Copaiba is the cannabinoid beta-caryophyllene (BCP). In fact our Copaiba essential oil contains 60% beta-caryophyllene. Caryophyllene may be neuro-protective and have cardiovascular and immune benefits. It’s also a powerful antioxidant that promotes immune health. There are many research papers indicating the anti-inflammatory benefits of copaiba. Cancer is an inflammatory process in the body, so any natural compound that can arrest or slow this process becomes a welcome ally.

Copaiba’s natural anti-inflammatory properties means that it may reduce the inflammatory processes by which cancer can spread.
In 2008, German researchers discovered that beta-caryophyllene also acts as a cannabinoid by binding to cannabinoid pathways in the body. Although some compounds like THC activate both cannabinoid pathways — CB1 and CB2 receptors — beta-caryophyllene specifically targets the CB2 receptor/works on the CB2 cannabinoid pathway, which does not produce a high feeling associated with marijuana use (which is the CB1 receptor).

How to Use Copaiba Essential Oil

Inhalation: diffuse your copaiba oil or inhale it directly to help your emotional wellbeing and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
Topical:  add a few drops of copaiba essential oil to a cotton ball and apply it to the skin to deal with acne, psoriasis, eczema or just to help your skin achieve a more healthy beautiful appearance.
Ingestion: Copaiba is among the oils that many people consider safe to ingest. It is recommended that you add a few drops to an empty capsule rather than swallowing it directly. Make sure to purchase the most pure therapeutic grade essential oils like these

Camel Wrestling In Turkey

Camel Wrestling is a traditional sport very popular along the west coast of Turkey, where male camels from local villages are pit against each other in a dusty stadium. The days leading to the grand fight is an exciting one for the Turkish people. The camels are draped with decorative rugs, carved saddles, and bells and walked through the streets, accompanied by music and dance. Camel owners are dressed in checkered caps, customary scarves around their neck, jackets, special pants and boots in an accordion-like shaped.

Beautiful Basalt Cliffs Of Los Organos, Spain

Los Organos is located in the island of La Gomera in the northern coast of Peru, about 15 minutes away from Mancora. These spectacular rock formations are considered to be one of the most beautiful basalt formations on the Canary Islands. The slender cliffs rise up out of the sea to a height of 800 metres and a width of 200m. The pillars look very similar to organ pipes, and hence the name Los Organos. These are the remains of vast lava masses of a once powerful volcano. As the lava cooled down it crystalized into these hexagonal looking pillars. Over time, erosion exposed the rocks, forming them to a natural work of art. Because the cliffs drop steeply into the sea, the only way to see Los Organos in all their might, is by taking a boat tour.
