After distress call, Fort Worth cops chip in to buy life-saving device for struggling WWII vet

When 95-year-old World War II veteran Julius Hatley of Fort Worth, Texas, woke up Thursday morning soaked in sweat due to a broken air conditioning unit, he wasn’t sure what to do. Hatley ended up calling 911, and two Fort Worth police officers were dispatched to what was considered a low priority call.
Officers William Margolis and Christopher Weir arrived on scene to find that the temperature was 85 degrees and rising inside the house. Since there wasn’t a way for them to fix the broken window unit, they decided to come up with their own solution to make sure Hatley had a comfortable place to live.
“I talked to my partner and I talked to the gentleman and said, ‘Look, we’re going to help you out. I’ll be back in just a little bit. I promise you,” Margolis told KDFW-TV.
The officers then took a trip to Home Depot where they purchased a brand new air conditioning unit for Hatley. When the store’s manager heard about their random act of kindness, he ended up donating $150 toward the unit for the World War II vet.
With the help of another FWPD officer, the team installed the new window air conditioning unit for Hatley to make sure they were leaving him in a safe and comfortable environment.
“This is what we do the job for. We don’t do the job just to issue citations and arrests, we do it to help people,” Weir told KDFW. “We got to see some humanity today and makes all of us feel good. It’s things like that that keep us going every day.”
